ORTEC, the global leader in mathematical optimization software and advanced analytics, needed to transition from local software to a modern web application using Material Design principles. With around 1,000 employees and offices in 13 countries, this project aimed to bring uniformity and consistency across their platform, leveraging the cloud for enhanced functionality and accessibility.

The Challenge

ORTEC's intelligent software required a user experience overhaul to ensure consistency and ease of use without alienating existing users. Adopting Material Design rules provided a strong foundation, but the challenge was to integrate these rules while maintaining the unique navigation patterns essential for ORTEC's sophisticated software. The goal was to enhance the visual design and user experience, making it intuitive yet powerful.

Our Solution

The first step was to implement a visual design system that ensured a uniform user experience across all platforms.

By leveraging Material Design, we established a high-quality baseline for the interface.

We then identified and addressed navigation patterns that deviated from this logic, focusing on improving usability by tackling low-hanging fruits.

This methodical approach ensured we maintained ORTEC's unique functionality while enhancing the overall user experience.

A significant aspect of the project was creating unique dashboards tailored to specific user personas. Through extensive user research, we identified multiple personas, each with distinct job stories.

This allowed us to define roles and design custom dashboards that catered to the unique tasks of each user type.

By doing so, we ensured that every user had the tools they needed to perform their jobs efficiently.

Impact

The transition to a Material Design system library set the stage for the redesign of all ORTEC applications. The high-contrast components and improved readability made the software more user-friendly and visually appealing. By creating a consistent design system, we significantly reduced the development time for future applications, enabling ORTEC to innovate faster and maintain a competitive edge in the industry.

This project demonstrates how adopting a systematic design approach can revolutionize a complex software suite. The redesigned ORTEC platform not only improved user satisfaction but also streamlined operations, positioning ORTEC as a leader in innovative software solutions.

Conclusion

The ORTEC project showcases the transformative power of intelligent UX design. By embracing Material Design and focusing on user needs, we created a cohesive, efficient, and visually appealing platform. This project highlights the importance of clarity, simplicity, and user-centric design in developing software that meets the highest standards of functionality and usability.
